Must read

Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation signed contracts for the acquisition of six 8,000 TEU container ships with dual-fuel methanol-ready specifications, in collaboration with Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.

The agreement contemplates the purchase of three vessels and the order for the construction of three more, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. This initiative marks a strategic step in Yang Ming’s fleet optimization plan, aimed at securing operational capacity in the medium and long term and strengthening its global service network, the company highlighted.

The new container ships will be the first in Yang Ming’s fleet to incorporate dual-fuel methanol-ready specifications. Once delivered, these vessels will progressively replace the 5,500 TEU ships of its class that have been in service for over two decades.

With energy-efficient designs, these new units will enhance Yang Ming’s competitiveness and operational flexibility on its main routes, while contributing to the continuous reduction of carbon intensity in compliance with international environmental regulations.

Thanks to its sustained collaboration with Nihon Shipyard, Imabari Shipbuilding and Shoei Kisen, Yang Ming continues to advance in marine decarbonization technologies.

The design of the main engine of these vessels is prepared for a future conversion to green methanol, and the propulsion system will include high-efficiency propellers, optimized rudders, and rudder fins to maximize performance. These features will allow for the adaptation of energy strategies as green methanol technologies and environmental regulations evolve, reaffirming Yang Ming’s commitment to its customers’ decarbonization goals and sustainable transportation.
