ZIM confirms blaze on ship off Colombo

Israeli carrier ZIM has confirmed that a its 8,586 teu Zim Charleston suffered a fire nearly
two weeks ago while it was in the Indian Ocean (IMN, August 18th). The vessel
at the weekend remained moored at Colombo port as accident investigators looked
into the incident.

According to insurance firm WK Webster the fire erupted in cargo hold 4 and up to 300 containers may have been damaged in the fire. The ZIM Charleston is chartered by ZIM and owned by Seaspan.

A ZIM spokesperson said that “we can confirm that a fire erupted on the ZIM Charleston, and the vessel is now in Colombo. According to information received from the owner, the fire took place under deck in a dangerous goods hold and first response to the fire was carried out by the vessel’s crew”.

2011-built, Hong Kong-flagged, 91,761 gt ZIM Charleston is owned by Seaspan Holdco LVII Ltd care of Seaspan Ship Management Ltd of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is entered with North of England on behalf of China Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association (CPI).
