The 24-hour strike will start at 06:00 in the morning on Friday, July 3 and will be completed at 06:00 on Saturday, July 4, while the strike rally is scheduled for 10:00 in the morning outside the /G «SUPER FERRY».

The seamen’s union places at the center of its mobilizations safety issues for crews and ships, arguing that the existing infrastructure of the port of Rafina is unable to serve the current number of scheduled ships.

As PENEN points out, the available berths are sufficient for about five ships, while today eleven are served, with the result that several remain anchored outside the port or carry out continuous shiftings.

Special mention is made of the anchorage of Rafina, which PENEN characterizes as unsafe and dangerous, arguing that daily ships are forced to remain at roadstead due to the inadequacy of berths. At the same time, the union highlights the effects of the existing working regime on crews, speaking of overtime, fatigue, limited rest hours and months-long separation of seafarers from their families, conditions which, according to the union, create serious risks for the safety of crews and ships.

According to the Union, for the first time in a public rally, captains of the line took the floor, who described the difficulties and dangers they face daily during berthing and anchoring maneuvers.

The president of PENEN also referred to the responsibilities of the ferry companies, demanding the full payment of wages corresponding to the overtime of the crews, which, as he argued, results from the current regime of anchorages and shiftings.

The mobilization was attended by representatives of unions and bodies, including members of PEMEN, as well as representatives of the network of associations «SAVE RAFINA», who reiterated their opposition to the expansion of the port.

PENEN points out that it has already sent an extrajudicial notice to the government, the Ministry of Shipping and the involved ferry companies, following the procedures prescribed by law for the declaration of the strike, and calls on its members to participate massively in the mobilization of July 3.

It is noted that members of the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Marine Seamen serving on the passenger-vehicle ferries of the Rafina ferry line carried out yesterday a three-hour warning work stoppage from 19:00 to 22:00 in the evening and a rally at the port of Rafina.
