The presence of representatives of the state, the academic community, the Judiciary and the shipping market highlighted the role that the program has acquired as a bridge between legal education and one of the most important sectors of the Greek economy.
The Athens Law School celebrated with splendor the 10th anniversary of the founding of the admittedly successful specialized Master’s Program in Maritime Law. At the anniversary event that took place at the Athens Concert Hall on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, addresses were given by the Minister of Shipping V. Kikilias and the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siasos.
Subsequently, under the coordination of the Dean of the Law School, Professor K. Christodoulou, the Deputy Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports Mr. Konstantinos Vlassis, Mr. Athanasios Martinos, CEO of Eastern Mediterranean Maritime Limited, and the Vice President of the Supreme Court Ms. Chrysoula Platia discussed the importance of maritime legal specialization as a critical pillar of the shipping cluster.
The event was closed with thanks by the head of the Maritime Law specialization, Professor L.I. Athanasiou.
A commemorative plaque was awarded to the International Group of P & I Clubs, which was represented by a large delegation, for the fruitful educational collaboration that has developed within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in 2024 and the internship opportunities at their individual members.
Nevertheless, the massive participation of graduates who are pursuing careers in Greece and abroad, who celebrated their efforts and reconnected with a longer-term objective, stole the show.
But why is a specialized Master’s Program in Maritime Law important, and especially that of the Athens Law School?
For more than one reason, someone knowledgeable about both academic matters and the needs of modern shipping would answer.
Firstly, because in no sector of the economy, a fortiori in the shipping sector, is healthy and innovative development conceivable without the simultaneous production of high national expertise in satellite services, especially in maritime law. The Master’s Program in Maritime Law, the first purely specialized program in a Greek public university, certified with excellence by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education, came to fill a gap in the country’s legal education, providing high-quality training in a legal sector critical to the national economy.
Secondly, because it offers what a young legal professional needs to face the challenges of the cross-border nature of transactions and constantly changing geopolitical conditions. Namely, an international orientation of education and extroversion, at the level of teaching staff, curriculum, and comparative methodological approach.
It is indeed an intensive study program, distinguished by its strong academic extroversion, as well as its interdisciplinary and multi-faceted approach.
Το πρόγραμμα καλύπτει όλο το φάσμα του γνωστικού αντικειμένου του ιδιωτικού ναυτικού δικαίου, περιλαμβάνοντας υποχρεωτικά μαθήματα (Ναύλωση & Θαλάσσια Μεταφορά, Ναυτική Διαιτησία & επίλυση ναυτικών διαφορών, Ειδικά θέματα διεθνούς ναυτικού δικαίου, Δίκαιο θαλάσσιας ασφάλισης) και μία μεγάλη γκάμα μαθημάτων επιλογής (Ναυτιλιακή οικονομία & χρηματοδότηση, ναυτεργατικό, κ.ά.).
Τρίτο δυνατό του σημείο ο συντονισμός με την πράξη και τις τρέχουσες ανάγκες της ναυτιλιακής αγοράς.
Για τον λόγο αυτό, πέραν των έμπειρων Καθηγητών της Νομικής και αδελφών Σχολών, συμμετέχουν με διδασκαλία και διαλέξεις, επισκέπτες Καθηγητές, προερχόμενοι από εγνωσμένου κύρους Ιδρύματα της αλλοδαπής καθώς και στελέχη διεθνών οργανισμών και επαγγελματικών φορέων, όλοι τους καταξιωμένοι στον χώρο τους.
Σημείο αναφοράς αποτελεί και το Μνημόνιο Συνεργασίας του ΠΜ με τη Διεθνή Ένωση των P&I Clubs, ενισχύοντας τον δεσμό μεταξύ ακαδημαϊκής εκπαίδευσης και επαγγελματικής πράξης.
Θα άξιζε να προσθέσει κανείς την τεράστια ερευνητική γκάμα, σε τέσσερις τουλάχιστον γλώσσες εργασίας καθώς και την ανταμοιβή αριστείας με δημοσιεύσεις διπλωματικών και διδακτορικών διατριβών, προετοιμάζοντας έτσι την επόμενη γενιά των «ναυτικολόγων» που θα πάρει τη σκυτάλη.
Με αφορμή τη συμπλήρωση της πρώτης δεκαετίας, το ΠΜΣ επιβεβαιώνει τη δέσμευσή του για συνεχή ανάπτυξη και οικοδόμηση ενός ισχυρού δικτύου αποφοίτων. Στόχος παραμένει η διατήρηση υψηλών ακαδημαϊκών προδιαγραφών σε συνδυασμό με την άμεση σύνδεση με τις εξελισσόμενες ανάγκες της διεθνούς ναυτιλιακής αγοράς.
Κυρίως όμως αποδεικνύει περίτρανα για το τι είναι ικανό Ελληνικό Δημόσιο Πανεπιστήμιο, παρά τις αγκυλώσεις στη ρύθμιση και λειτουργία του. Τα επιτεύγματα πρέπει να αναγνωρίζονται και να υποστηρίζονται.
