A search for 12 missing crew members was continuing after their cement carrier was reported sunk on Monday (31 October).
Navigating with 17 Indonesian seafarers, the 10,000 dwt, Panama-flagged Xing Shun No 1, lost power 14 miles off Lizhuoshuixi before eventually sinking on the east side of the Changhua channel in the Taiwan Strait.
As five seafarers were rescued by a passing container ship it was reported that the remaining 12 were alive. However, empty lifeboats were subsequently spotted by a rescue vessel and Air Crew Corps in their search for survivors.
Prior to the sinking three seafarers had been disembarked for medical treatment for injuries sustained on 30 October. The cause of the injuries has yet to come to light.
Information about the vessel have been scant: no insurer has been identified. Equasis lists the owner as Hong Kong’s Jin Shun Maritime, but Clarksons records the ownership as unknown.
