At around midnight local time on November 22, a 73-year-old Australian man went overboard and was reported missing from the Disney Wonder cruise ship. The incident occurred while the ship was en route from Melbourne to Auckland, New Zealand. The matter is still under investigation, and officials have not yet responded.

It is reported that the missing man was from the northern suburbs of Melbourne. He jumped into the Tasman Sea in the early hours of that day. Police stated that the preliminary assessment is that the man died after jumping into the sea and do not consider the death suspicious. Currently, a coroner’s report is being prepared, and the man’s identity has not been made public.

Reports said that the cruise ship immediately turned around to initiate a search after the incident. The crew spent approximately five hours searching for the man but were ultimately unsuccessful. During the search, the ship activated standard procedures for maritime incidents. Crew members were stationed on various decks and used thermal imaging equipment to scan the sea surface in an attempt to locate the passenger. However, despite the assistance of technical equipment and the crew’s swift action, the vast and variable conditions of the Tasman Sea presented significant challenges.

It wasn’t until Saturday noon that the approximately 600 passengers on board became aware that the ship had turned around. For the passengers on the Disney Wonder, the overall atmosphere noticeably changed as news of the incident spread throughout the ship.

One passenger recalled that the captain later announced the situation over the public address system, stating that a passenger had gone overboard, but the search had yielded no results. He mentioned that the atmosphere on the entire ship became somber after the incident, and the emotions of many crew members were also affected, requiring time to recover.

Following the incident, both passengers and crew on board were processing the sudden news, and many expressed condolences to the family of the missing man.

Currently, the Disney Wonder has resumed its journey and is continuing towards New Zealand, but it is expected to arrive one day later than originally scheduled. It is understood that this five-night voyage from Melbourne to Auckland is one of the last local cruise routes operated by Disney in Australia. The ship has 11 decks and can accommodate approximately 1,750 passengers.

It is worth mentioning that Disney Cruise Line had announced earlier this year that it would cease operations of routes departing from Australia during the 2026–2027 cruise season. So far, the company has not issued a statement regarding this incident.
