MAN 12V 175D-MM marine engine ordered for Svitzer TRAnsverse tugs (source: MAN)
High-speed engines have been selected for a new design of tugboat being built for Svitzer in Turkey
MAN Energy Solutions will supply two 12-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines for the first compact TRAnsverse tug under construction at Sanmar Shipyards. The two 12V 175D-MM marine engines, each with 2,040 kW of power, will be delivered from MAN Energy Solutions’ production facility in Denmark at the end of the year.
A selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust gas aftertreatment system will remove NOx emissions to enable the tug to meet IMO Tier III standards and two azimuth thrusters will generate a bollard pull of 60 tonnes.
Maersk group subsidiary Svitzer worked with Robert Allan Ltd to design the TRAnsverse tugboat and Sanmar is building it for delivery in Q3 2023.
Svitzer chief operating officer Ingrid Uppelschoten Snelderwaard said several innovations were involved in the TRAnsverse tug design. “The compact 26-m version of the TRAnsverse tug called for short Tier III engines,” she said. “With the MAN 175D engine we believe we have found the right balance between engine size and power requirement. Our experience with this type of engine is good and we recently used this type of engine for two ice-breaking tugs delivered last year.”
These two ice-breaking tugs, Svitzer Embla and Svitzer Edda, were built by Med Marine in Turkey to another RAL design.
Sanmar Shipyards engineering director Hakan Tunç said the TRAnsverse 2600 tugboat design was developed in collaboration with Svitzer, RAL and MAN. “Collaboration has resulted in optimisation at every stage of the development of this innovative TRAnsverse 2600 tugboat, including its power, crew safety and environmental impact,” said Mr Tunç.
“We are proud to be the builder of this Svitzer-created and RAL-designed tugboat. We are also happy to try the high-speed MAN engine with its SCR solution in this special project.”
MAN Energy Solutions head of high speed Benjamin Andres said this was the latest reference for the MAN 175D engine within the tug sector.
“It clearly demonstrates the engine is ideally suited to such a demanding application, where its technical and economical credentials stand it in good stead, while its compactness, performance and operational cost benefits are all seen as key aspects for our customers,” said Mr Andres.
The MAN 175D engine range has three variants of 12, 16 and 20 cylinders. It is available with an output ranging from 1,500 kW to 4,400 kW.
