The new IBF agreement will ensure a 5% increase in seafarers’ base wages during 2026-2027. This was reported by Seafarers Journal, citing PRMTU.

This agreement was reached between employers and representatives of maritime unions following negotiations at the International Bargaining Forum (IBF).

The agreement covers over 11,000 vessels and 400,000 seafarers worldwide, uniting nearly 500 maritime employers along with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and its affiliated maritime unions.

Seafarers covered by the agreement will receive a 5% increase in base wages over two years (a 3.5% increase from January 1, 2026, and a 1.5% increase from January 1, 2027). IBF participants also agreed to increase death and disability payments in the current version of the IBF Framework Agreement, in line with the 5% wage increase.

Earlier, SJ reported that Seafarers may be exempted from military service if they pay a “hefty” tax.

As clarified by the Trade Union of Marine Transport Workers of Ukraine (PRMTU), local negotiations were also held between PRMTU and the International Maritime Employers’ Council (IMEC). Thanks to these negotiations, Ukrainian seafarers will not only receive an increase in base wages in accordance with the IBF agreement but also additional improvements in working and living conditions on board vessels.
