Professor Juan Antonio Moreno Martínez will lead the Barcelona Nautical Faculty (FNB) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC) for the next six years, after winning the elections held from June 16 to 19. The sole candidacy of Juan Antonio Moreno received the support of 79.5% of the weighted votes cast.
The inauguration ceremony took place on July 22 in the Sinibald Hall of the Faculty and was attended by Francesc Torres, rector of the UPC; Agustí Martín, dean of the Faculty since April 2017, as well as the university’s general secretary, Neus Cónsul, who read the appointment.
Juan Antonio Moreno Martínez completed his studies at the former Escuela Superior de la Marina Civil, the current FNB, where he graduated in Civil Marine Engineering, specializing in Naval Machinery, in 1986. Between 1986 and 1991, he developed his professional career in the maritime sector, serving as a Merchant Marine engineering officer in various ranks and aboard different types of merchant ships: tankers, container ships, passenger ships, and Ro-Ro vessels.
Extensive academic career
In 1998, he secured the position of titular university professor in the Department of Nautical Science and Engineering, in the field of Machinery and Thermal Engines, teaching at the FNB. In 2016, he earned his doctorate from the UPC, and in 2017, he was appointed titular university professor. The new dean’s teaching and research specialization focuses on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), with particular emphasis on the ultrasonic method, and he oversees the NDT Laboratory at the faculty. In research, he has collaborated with the Interdepartment Research Group for the Applied Scientific Collaboration (Irgasc), part of the Bioengineering and Biomaterials division of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the UPC, as well as with the UPC’s Research Center in Nanoengineering (CRnE).
In academic management, he has held various positions at the FNB: vice-dean of Strategic Planning (1998–1999), academic secretary (1999–2001), vice-dean of Teaching Innovation and Promotion (2010), vice-dean of studies (2013), and, from 2017 to 2025, vice-dean of Institutional Relations and Promotion.
The new FNB leadership team will consist of professors Montserrat Vela del Olmo, Rosa Maria Fernández Cantí, Jordi Fonollosa Magrinyà, Ramón Grau Mur, Clara Borén Altés, Marcel·la Castells Sanabra, and Antoni Llull Marroig.
