HELMEPA Scholarships: Tangible support for the new generation of scientists

Among the strategic priorities of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) are both the recognition of excellence and the creation of equal opportunities for advancement for the new generation, with an open spirit and without discrimination. Under this prism, from 1998 to the present, HELMEPA has awarded a total of 68 scholarships, of which 40 were awarded to women and 28 to men, covering both maritime studies (37 scholarships) and environmental studies (31 scholarships).

Recently, the HELMEPA scholarship award ceremony for the Academic Year 2025-2026 took place. The ceremony was held on Friday, July 18, at the offices of Diana Shipping Services S.A. During the event, the new scholarship recipients, accompanied by their families, had the opportunity to meet with the Members of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association.

Specifically, the following scholarships were awarded during the ceremony:

Ms. Semiramis Paliou, President of HELMEPA, awarded the scholarship in memory of Georgios P. Livanos, Founder of HELMEPA, amounting to €7,500, to Mr. Efstratios-Panagiotis Pergantis for postgraduate studies in “International Shipping, Finance, and Management” at the Athens University of Economics and Business.

Mr. Ioannis Xylas, Member of the Board of Directors of HELMEPA, awarded a second scholarship in memory of Georgios P. Livanos, amounting to €7,500, to Ms. Penelope-Panagiota Giannakopoulou for postgraduate studies in “MSc Sustainable Blue Economy” at the Department of Maritime Studies of the University of Piraeus.

Mr. Ioannis Drakogiannopoulos, Honorary President of the HELMEPA Training Committee, awarded the scholarship in memory of Captain Vassilis K. Konstantakopoulos, Honorary President of HELMEPA, amounting to €15,000, to Mr. Ioannis Georgakis for postgraduate studies in “Wind Energy” at the Technical University of Denmark.

Ms. Irene Daifa, General Secretary of the Board of Directors of HELMEPA, awarded the scholarship in memory of Stavros Daifas, amounting to €15,000, to Mr. Anastasios Samaras-Malamas for postgraduate studies in “MSc in Economics (Environmental & Resource Economics)” at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Ms. Ioanna Martinou, Member of the Board of Directors of HELMEPA, awarded the scholarship in memory of Athena I. Martinou, amounting to €15,000, a generous donation from the Athena I. Martinou Foundation, to Ms. Niki Giannakou for postgraduate studies in “Magister Juris” at the University of Oxford.

Ms. Maria Chatzioannou, Member of the Board of Directors of HELMEPA, awarded the scholarship in memory of Vassos Chatzioannou, amounting to €10,000, to Mr. Nikolaos Papanikolaou for postgraduate studies in “Environmental Engineering” at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.

Ms. Electra Apostolopoulou and Mr. Spyros-Nikolaos Apostolopoulos awarded the scholarship in memory of Nikolaos S. Apostolopoulos, amounting to €10,000, to Ms. Maria Chatzikonstantinou for postgraduate studies in “LLM Maritime Law” at City, St. George’s University of London.
