A maritime faculty student lost his life in the sea he entered to cool off.

Berkan Aslan, a student of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering at İskenderun Technical University (İSTE) Barbaros Hayrettin Faculty of Naval Architecture and Maritime, drowned and lost his life after entering the sea to cool off from the ship where he was doing his internship.

According to the information obtained, the incident occurred off the coast of Mersin. Berkan Aslan, who was an intern on the ship named “ALARA” owned by Dolphin Denizcilik, entered the sea to cool off. After a while, the ship’s crew noticed that Aslan was missing and reported the situation to the Coast Guard Command.

Coast Guard and Coastal Safety teams dispatched to the area upon the report initiated search and rescue operations. As a result of the efforts, the lifeless body of the young engineer was recovered.

Statement from Dolphin Denizcilik

A statement was issued by Dolphin Denizcilik regarding the death of Berkan Aslan.

The statement reads as follows:

“A tragic incident occurred on August 9, 2025, during the delivery of provisions in port on the ship ‘ALARA,’ owned by Dolphin Denizcilik. Berkan Aslan, who was serving as a Deck Intern on the ship, entered the sea of his own volition and, unfortunately, lost his life after being swept away by the current.

Immediately after the incident, all emergency response procedures were followed, the relevant authorities were informed, and search and rescue operations were initiated. The family of our crew member was promptly contacted, and we have stood by them during this difficult time.

Comments and news in the press and on social media that portray the circumstances of the incident differently or create a misleading impression about our company and our ship’s personnel do not reflect the truth.

Our company is deeply saddened by the loss of our valued colleague. We pray to Allah for mercy upon the deceased and extend our condolences to his family and loved ones.
