Norwegian Hydrogen and GreenIron sign strategic agreement to scale fossil-free metal production

Must read

In October last year, Norwegian Hydrogen AS and GreenIron H2 AB announced their agreement for delivery of green hydrogen from Norwegian Hydrogen’s production plant in Hellesylt, Norway, to GreenIron’s first full-scale furnace for direct reduction of metals in Sandviken, Sweden.

Now, the two companies have broadened their collaboration, signing a strategic agreement to co-locate and build green hydrogen production plants and direct reduction furnaces at additional locations.

GreenIron’s patented technology uses green hydrogen to reduce metal oxides without generating CO₂ emissions, enabling truly fossil-free metal production. Norwegian Hydrogen’s operational experience from Hellesylt, combined with new hydrogen capacity under development for the Sandviken facility, provides a strong platform for expansion. The collaboration also creates opportunities for wider hydrogen use in surrounding industries, further accelerating the green transition in the region.

“This agreement strengthens our ability to deliver integrated, fossil-free solutions to key players in the steel and metals sector,” said Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen. “Together with GreenIron, we are creating a scalable model for hydrogen-based industrial transformation, building on experience from our existing plants and collaboration.”

The strategic cooperation enables tangible decarbonization outcomes by combining Norwegian Hydrogen’s infrastructure and expertise with GreenIron’s technology for fossil-free direct reduction of metals using green hydrogen.
