It has been reported that the French container shipping and logistics giant CMA CGM has placed an order for six liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel 22,000 TEU container ships in China. The Greek shipbroker Intermodal said the shipbuilding contract also includes four optional 22,000 TEU container ships.

Reportedly, the green vessel fleet will be built by the state-owned Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC), located in Dalian, China, and a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), and will be delivered between 2027 and 2029.

The French giant is alleged to be paying between $205 million and $210 million per unit.

According to Alphaliner’s TOP 100 list, CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping company, currently has a fleet of more than 680 vessels with a capacity of over 4 million TEU.

In March 2025, CMA CGM announced an order worth approximately $2.6 billion for a total of 12 dual-fuel LNG container ships. The shipbuilding contract, covering 18,000 TEU container ships, was awarded to the Jiangnan Shipyard, which is also part of CSSC.

At the end of January 2025, CMA CGM placed an order for a similar LNG dual-fuel container ship fleet in South Korea. These container ships will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) under a contract worth approximately $2.57 billion. The new vessels are scheduled for delivery by the end of December 2028.
