APM Terminals, the port management division of Maersk, has chosen FCC to carry out the first phase of works for two berths designed for megaships at its terminal on the South wharf of the Port of Barcelona.

The works, which began in mid-August, include reinforcement of existing caissons, deepening of the quay to 15 meters, civil works to enable electrification, and adaptation of mooring systems for next-generation container vessels.

According to APM Terminals, the investment in this first phase amounts to “more than €20 million,” with works being carried out “while the terminal remains operational and without affecting the service provided to customers.”

“The terminal will be prepared to operate two deep-draft vessels simultaneously,” said Julián Fernández, managing director of APM Terminals Spanish Gateways.

The first phase is scheduled for completion in January 2027, while the second phase will conclude in the third quarter of 2028, completing a modernization plan worth more than €156 million.

Once both phases are finalized, APM Terminals Barcelona will have the infrastructure to “operate simultaneously two mega-container vessels” and will have executed “civil works for the installation of the Offshore Power Supply (OPS) system,” intended to eliminate emissions from berthed ships.

APM Terminals is a global port and terminal operator headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands. It is a subsidiary of A.P. Møller-Mærsk A/S, listed on Nasdaq Copenhagen, and operates a network of port facilities and inland services in multiple countries.

FCC (Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas, S.A.) is a Spanish multinational company, specialized in infrastructure development, environmental services, and water management.
