The global fleet of fully cellular container ships has recently exceeded 6,600 units, with a combined capacity of more than 32.7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (Mteu), according to Alphaliner.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company currently accounts for 20.9% of the global container ship fleet, with a total capacity surpassing 6.8 Mteu and approaching 7 Mteu. The company’s owned fleet has also passed 4.1 Mteu, while the total number of MSC vessels stands at more than 940. Its orderbook includes nearly 130 units, amounting to about 2.2 Mteu.

CMA CGM, ranked third among operators, has expanded its fleet to over 700 units and reached 4 Mteu capacity several months ago.

Alphaliner noted that with a historically high orderbook, the global container ship fleet is expected to keep growing in the foreseeable future.
