El Organismo Supervisor de la Inversión en Infraestructura de Transporte de Uso Público (Ositran) is carrying out permanent supervision of the modernization project of the Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway, one of the most important railway concessions in the country, which incorporates the BIM methodology as a real-time technical monitoring tool.
The railway route update covers 128.2 kilometers divided into two sections with seven stations, 20 stops, 15 bridges and 38 tunnels. Regarding rolling stock, the responsible company is committed to providing two new diesel-electric locomotives, three new cars, five freight cars and four DMU railcars with four cars each.
The initiative was awarded to the company Concesionaria Ferroviaria del Perú S. A. (Cofeperú) under a co-financed Public-Private Partnership model. The contract, signed on May 28, 2025, establishes a concession term of 30 years, valid until May 2055, and an investment commitment of USD 339,828,766.96 excluding VAT.
According to what was reported by the concessionaire, the Definitive Engineering Study (EDI) of Civil Works shows 67% progress as of May 2026. Within the framework of its supervisory function, Ositran has already completed two key milestones in this process: the hiring of specialized supervision on May 22, 2026 and the issuance of its technical opinion regarding the EDI of the rolling stock on May 24 of the same year.
In parallel, the agency conducts field inspections in critical sectors of the route. The most recent visits covered areas such as Aguas Calientes, Cuenca, the Chinche Bridge and the Manuel Tellería and Huancavelica stations, allowing verification of the current state of the track and comparison of the conceptual design of future structures, such as the Chanchas Bridge and the exhibition hall of the Huancavelica Station, with the technical standards required by the contract.
According to the updated schedule, it is estimated that the approval of the EDIs will be finalized on December 30, 2026, the financial closing in April 2027 and the start of physical works in May 2027.
