Recently, the Port of Long Beach announced that all containers that fell overboard from the ZIM “Mississippi” cargo ship have been salvaged from the port waters.
The initial accident report indicated approximately 75 containers fell into the sea, but this number increased as crushed and submerged containers were found at a nearby dock.
The final total number of containers salvaged was 95, which is higher than the port’s initial count.
Furthermore, following the completion of the salvage operation, all vessel traffic restrictions have been lifted, and vessel transits near Pier G no longer require harbor master approval. During the salvage operation phase, a total of 142 vessels were approved for transit, ensuring continued operations within the busy port complex.
Currently, the cause of the container stack collapse remains unclear, although union representatives for the port workers have ruled out the possibility of longshoreman error.
