The main international maritime associations and organizations reiterated their support for the adoption by the world’s governments at the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the “Net-Zero Framework,” during an Extraordinary Session of the entity’s Marine Environment Protection Committee.
According to the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the global industry remains committed to working, in collaboration with IMO Member States, to implement the balanced regulatory package and achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 or around that date.
The initiative includes the necessary incentives to reduce the risk of investments in new green marine fuels to accelerate the total decarbonization of international shipping and implement a just transition for the maritime workforce.
The ICS stated that only global standards will decarbonize a global industry. Without the regulatory framework, shipping would risk a growing tangle of unilateral regulations, which would increase costs without effectively contributing to decarbonization.
Likewise, the Chamber described it as a unique and historic opportunity for governments to establish a comprehensive global framework, which will be strictly applied worldwide, to incentivize the shipping industry’s transition to net-zero, while ensuring a level playing field.
