Representatives from the Port of Coquimbo, together with regional councilors and the Regional Ministerial Secretariat (Seremi) of Transport, visited the port facility of Valparaíso to learn on the ground about the operational strategies that have optimized logistical transport and cargo transfer.

The objective of the instance was to evaluate the possibility of implementing these practices in the Coquimbo terminal with the aim of strengthening its competitiveness, attracting new national and international markets, and enhancing the economic development of the region.

Laura Chiuminatto, general manager of Terminal Puerto Coquimbo (TPC), emphasized that “this visit is like looking 15 years into the future, observing how we could anticipate and solve challenges such as traffic, congestion, documentation, security, and cargo inspections. We want to learn from this experience to build a more efficient, agile, and adaptable model, which allows us to project sustainable growth in our port from the perspective of transfer.”

During the day, the regional representatives visited the Logistics Support Extension Zone (Zeal) and the Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS) to learn in detail about their operation and the implemented technological solutions, which have contributed to optimizing cargo management and decongesting the access to the port facility.

The regional councilor and vice president of the Territorial Planning commission, Francisco Corral, mentioned that “this experience is very important for us, as with this information a better projection can be made for the development of our port and we hope that the first steps will be taken soon to materialize our own logistics support zone in Coquimbo.”

Strengthening International Markets

With this field work, the aim is to strengthen the attraction of international cargo to the Port of Coquimbo. In this context, the Regional Government and the Regional Council maintain active collaboration with various Argentine provinces with the purpose of establishing strategic alliances that boost commercial exchange and promote the economic growth of the area.

In this regard, the regional councilor and president of the International Relations Commission, Pedro Valencia, highlighted that “we have set ourselves the goal of generating greater cargo movement towards the Port of Coquimbo. That is why, together with Governor Cristóbal Juliá, we visited the province of Tucumán to open new routes of productive and commercial collaboration, in addition to continuing to strengthen ties with other Argentine regions such as San Juan.

It is for this reason that it is of the utmost relevance for us to see how other national ports attract markets from different borders.

Logistics Development

The visit also allowed for the analysis of the possibility of implementing a Logistics Extension and Support Zone in Coquimbo, an infrastructure that would streamline the movement of cargo in an orderly and safe manner, reducing congestion and promoting operational efficiency.

“This is an area designed to serve the trucks and cargo heading to the ports and, with the correct functioning of this system, operations can be optimized by moving the cargo from the sea to take them to points where they can be handled more efficiently,” explained the Head of Logistics Management of the Port Company of Valparaíso, Pedro García.

Land Optimization

The Regional Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Alejandra Maureira Flores, highlighted the progress being made with the study of a railway plan with which “it would be possible to connect the port sector to streamline the movement of cargo.”

“We are open to receiving and analyzing other initiatives that favor accessibility to the port of the Coquimbo region, thus making it a much more attractive destination for the import and export of products and materials,” stated the regional authority.
