Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (YZJ) delivered the KMTC Mombasa container ship, with a capacity of 8,264 TEU, to the Japanese company Nissen Kaiun. The vessel is the second of two conventionally propelled units that the Chinese shipyard built for said Japanese trading house.
This unit follows the KMTC Dammam, delivered at the end of September. Both ships are committed to long-term charter contracts with the South Korean shipping company Korea Marine Transport (KMTC Line), according to Alphaliner.
Alphaliner considers the ships to be Maric Hercules series designs. “Despite some variations, they could be described as conventionally propelled half-sisters of the 15 dual-fuel (LNG) ships of Seaspan and ZIM, of the Maric Hercules 7000 type, delivered by YZJ between October 2023 and January 2025. Seaspan markets this design under the name Saver 7000 CleanBlue,” it noted.
The KMTC Mombasa has a length of 272 meters and a beam of 42.80 meters, with an approximate deadweight of 83,000 tons and a draft of 15 meters. It is propelled by a main MAN B&W 6 G8ME-C10-EGRTC engine that delivers 28,260 kW, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.
The vessel has 800 reefer plugs and is equipped with an exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber).
KMTC Mombasa will be part of KMTC’s China–West Coast of India (AIS4) service, operated jointly with X-Press Feeders, TS Lines, ONE, and Evergreen.
