Colombia could become the main coffee supplier to the United States, thanks to the tariff war, driven by President Donald Trump, which opened a space for the Colombian product, boosting its exports, mainly to the North American country.

According to figures backed by analysis from the National Foreign Trade Association (Analdex) and the National Coffee Exporters Association (Asoexport), between January and August 2025, sales to this destination increased 14.7% compared to the same period the previous year, reaching 3.3 million 60-kilogram sacks.

In 2024, the country occupied the second position with a 19% share, behind Brazil which has 32%; however, the situation in 2025 could reduce that gap between the two anwhile, in the January-August period of the current year, Brazilian territory fell 20.7% in its coffee shipments to the U.S., compared to the same span in 2024, according to data from Cecafé (Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council). This, by going from 5 million 60kg sacks to 4 million, which reconfirmed the impact of the tariff measures and the political tension between Brazil and the United States on their coffee trade dynamics.

“The global coffee export flows are changing due to the tariffs, in that sense, Colombia could become the main coffee supplier to the United States. This is very good news for the country, as greater interest in Colombian coffee worldwide could bring more income for the coffee-growing families in Colombia,” explained Gustavo Gómez, president of Asoexport.

“The good coffee production, together with international prices, have made coffee that standard-bearer to lead the country’s exports. We must take advantage of that tariff window that opens in our favor, to consolidate our positioning in the United States,” said Javier Díaz Molina, president of Analdex.
