A program produced by an Indian technical institute can predict thetrajectoryof a disabled ship, enabling salvors to prevent groundings and collisions
A computer program has been developed by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) thatsimulates the real-time pathway of a ship that has lost propulsion power, helping salvage teams to prevent groundings and collisions with maritime and offshore infrastructure.
Collision risks are increasing as waterways become more congested and renewable energy and oil and gas installationsimpactshipping routes.
IRS has used this program to launch its ship drift–trajectory prediction serviceto improve maritime risk management and enhance emergency response planning for disabled vessels.
