The Port of Bilbao has showcased its best connectivity assets and the opportunities it offers at a logistical level at one of the main international trade and investment fairs, the China International Import Expo (CIIE), held in Shanghai.

With this institutional mission, the Port of Bilbao reaffirms its international vocation, its commitment to innovation and sustainability, and its objective of remaining a strategic logistics node in global trade.

Seizing the opportunity, the delegation headed by the president of the Port of Bilbao, Iván Jiménez, and the director of Operations, Commercial, Logistics and Strategy, Andima Ormaetxe, visited the world’s largest fully automated container terminal, the SIPG Shanghai Donghai Branch, where they were received by Xu Maobing and Philippe Bérard, from CSPS.

Iván Jiménez: “We thank Cosco Group for its hospitality and commitment to the Port of Bilbao”

This visit served to explore new opportunities in port management, automation, and the decarbonization of maritime transport, as both ports share a common vision: a more efficient, digital, and sustainable logistics ecosystem.

Iván Jiménez has begun to fulfill his promise to become the “first commercial” of the Port of Bilbao and has held high-level meetings with representatives of Cosco Group, including Cosco Shipping Ports and Cosco Shipping Lines, the world’s largest shipping company. Also present were the executive president of the Pérez y Cía. Group, Javier Ferrer; and Jon Azarloza, CEO of the Basque Group, the strategic partner in Europe for Cosco Shipping Line.

These meetings have made it possible to strengthen the strategic cooperation between both entities and explore new opportunities for logistics and commercial development internationally.

Under the slogan Your Intermodal Link Between China, Iberia, and the Atlantic Markets, the Port of Bilbao has presented (Pavilion 7.2, Stand A4-05) to Chinese companies and institutions the opportunities it offers as the main port in the Bay of Biscay and on the Spanish Atlantic coast. Bilbao is the main logistics and maritime center in Northern Spain and its strategic position makes it a key gateway between Europe, the Iberian Peninsula and global markets, offering an efficient alternative to the congestion affecting many of the main European ports.

The delegation from the Biscayan port highlights its state-of-the-art infrastructure, smooth multimodal connections and links with more than 50 Chinese ports and 20 inland logistics centers, and also stands out for its operational capacity, deep drafts, intermodal services and its firm commitment to sustainability and technological transformation.

The presence of the Port of Bilbao at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) fair is part of its strategy to consolidate itself as a reference port on the European Atlantic axis and to strengthen its commercial relations with Asia, especially with China, the leading commercial market in container traffic; to offer its guarantee for fast, sustainable, and profitable freight transport and to present itself as “the smart option for Atlantic trade”.
