Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) recently signed a letter of intent with the ship-owning and management company Rederiet Stenersen AS for the construction of six chemical tankers, with a capacity of 18,000 dwt each.
The letter of intent marks a pivotal moment for the exports of India’s shipbuilding industry, covering six vessels worth approximately $220 million, with the possibility of adding an additional six vessels of the same category, the announcement states. The vessels will be built at the Pipavav shipyard facilities in Gujarat. This is the first major deal for SDHI since it took over the management of the Pipavav shipyard.
Commenting on the order, Vivek Merchant, Director of Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI), stated: “This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for SDHI and for the Indian shipbuilding industry – our first major export of advanced chemical tankers to Norway. We believe this is a step towards realizing India’s maritime ambitions, by building large and complex vessels, such as tankers, bulk carriers and specialized ships. The trust shown to us by Rederiet Stenersen AS reflects the global confidence in India’s shipbuilding capabilities and SDHI’s commitment to delivering world-class, future-ready vessels.”
