With an official groundbreaking ceremony, the new fire station at Meyer Werft was launched. The building is being constructed directly in the green area adjacent to the logistics center.
The management of the new site will be handled by Meyer Port 4, a long-standing partner with extensive experience in safety and fire protection.
What began in /73 with a handcart and three dedicated employees as the company’s first fire brigade has continued to develop over the decades. The investment in a new fire protection center is part of the current modernization plan and is necessary to meet all the shipyard’s regulatory requirements.
With the relocation of Rheiderlandstrasse (K158), which will be completed in the summer of 2026, the building and the adjacent logistics center will be located within the shipyard premises and will subsequently border the district road (access road to the highway). The new fire station will be completed in the autumn of 2026 and will be operational by the beginning of 2027 at the latest.
“With the construction of the new fire station, we are jointly setting an example for a secure future. Fire protection is an essential component for success in shipbuilding,” said Meyer Werft’s Managing Director, Bernd Eikens.
“After several years of temporary solutions for our fire department, a new era is beginning. We will now have all modern solutions and our academy, provided centrally and well-organized to ensure safe and efficient operations,” stated Marcel Hermes, Managing Director of Meyer Port 4.
The department has approximately 50 full-time firefighters, including five women, and is on duty 24 hours a day. In addition, there is a part-time group with 36 positions, half of which are vacant. Furthermore, 20 shipyard employees provide support to their colleagues in a similar manner during emergencies.
The Meyer Werft fire department not only has several fire engines, but also a telescopic aerial platform for firefighting or rescue operations from heights of up to 55 meters, as well as a multi-purpose vessel.
