The latest Annual DEI Review in Maritime, published by the Diversity Study Group (DSG), reveals that the expectations of seafarers and shore-based personnel for fair, inclusive, and accountable workplaces are becoming increasingly distinct. The report annually tracks employee views on the data-driven diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and policies implemented by participating organizations.

The review surveyed a record number of approximately 10,000 participants, with key questions answered about their experiences, the support they receive at work, and their attitudes towards DEI.

Key findings from the review included that DEI training has a measurable positive impact on both shore-based and sea-based personnel, but it also highlighted persistent gaps in support, particularly for mid-level managers who play a critical role in shaping corporate culture.

Heidi Heseltine, Founder and CEO of DSG, said: “In a year where the global debate around DEI has often been shaped by the impact of woke backlash, our data paints a very different picture for both seafarers and shore-based personnel. They are not stepping back, but are instead more determined. Employees have clearly stated that they want justice, respect, and accountability from their employers and are speaking up more than ever about the changes they want to see in their workplaces.”
