BW LNG has ordered two large LNG carriers from South Korea’s HD Hyundai Group, confirming market expectations about the buyer behind an earlier announcement from the Korean shipbuilder.
The Oslo-based company said in a social media statement that the vessels, to be constructed at HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, are scheduled for delivery in the early fourth quarter of 2028.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering recently reported the contract for two LNG carriers worth 741.2 billion won, or about 507–508 million dollars in total, with the shipbuilding period running through 30 November 2028.
The newbuildings will feature a “state-of-the-art design that enables the industry’s lowest fuel consumption and emissions.” Both ships will be equipped with XDF 2.2 propulsion with variable compression ratio, shaft generators and a full reliquefaction system, technologies intended to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and cargo boil-off losses.
The design includes additional technical options it plans to refine with future clients, without providing further details. Information cited from BW LNG’s website indicates that the vessels, listed as hulls H8340 and H8341, will each have a capacity of about 177,000 cubic metres.
Industry reports suggest the contract value reflects a price of roughly 254 million dollars per ship, consistent with current levels for high-specification LNG carriers.
BW LNG is the liquefied natural gas business unit of BW Group, a global maritime group incorporated in Bermuda with operations across shipping, floating infrastructure and energy transition assets.
