A new integration between Ocean Wise and Trelleborg is bringing real-time whale alerts directly into the tools used by marine pilots around the world. The collaboration aims to make whale protection a routine part of navigation rather than a separate conservation effort.
Ocean Wise and Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure have joined forces to expand the reach of the Whale Report Alert System, a platform designed to reduce the risk of ship strikes on whales through real-time sightings. The latest step is the integration of the system into SafePilot Pro, Trelleborg’s professional navigation software used by marine pilots across global ports.
The Whale Report Alert System draws on sightings submitted through Ocean Wise’s reporting platform along with visual and automated detections from partner organisations. Mariners have long relied on SMS, email and app notifications. Now the information appears directly within the navigation interface pilots already depend on.
The first roll out outside North America is taking place in northwestern Australia, an area that is both a major export gateway and a seasonal migration path for humpback whales. The region sees intense vessel traffic from June to October. Both organisations say that integrating environmental information into mainstream navigation helps bridge operational needs with conservation goals.

The partnership gives Ocean Wise a pathway to bring its alerting system to more regions while allowing Trelleborg to embed environmental intelligence into tools that already shape daily decision making on the water. Ocean Wise is in discussions with other navigation software providers to extend the approach further.
Both organisations see the model as a practical way to make marine mammal protection an integrated part of maritime operations rather than an external consideration.
