70 Russian ships become part of US sanctions list

Must read

After a G7 meeting, the US has included 70 Russian vessels on its sanctions list due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The US has tightened sanctions further against Russia, Russian companies, banks and individuals, according to an announcement from the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Several Russian companies and individuals have been included on the OFAC’s sanctions list as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Among these are a number of shipping companies and 70 Russian-flagged ships.

The Russian shipping firms, which are now part of the list, count M Leasing LLC, Oboronlogistika, Transmorflot, JSC Northern Shipping Co, Nord Project LLC Transport Co and SC South LLC, among others.

In April, the US prohibited all Russia-related vessels from calling at US ports and furthermore launched an import ban against Russian oil. The UK has also banned Russia-related ships from access to the British ports and expects to phase out all imports of Russian oil before the turn of the year.

OFAC’s list of sanctioned Russian shipping companies and ships can be found here.

At a virtual meeting yesterday, the Group of Seven (G7) – counting the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan – agreed to ”phase out our dependency on Russian energy, including by phasing out or banning the import of Russian oil. We will ensure that we do so in a timely and orderly fashion, and in ways that provide time for the world to secure alternative supplies,” reads a White House statement.

The EU has also prohibited Russian-flagged ships and is currently discussing how to ban or phase out Russian crude oil and refined products before the end of 2022. Countries such as Slovakia and Hungary are, however, displeased with the EU’s proposal.
