On June 22, the Ministry of Transport released the “2025 Statistical Bulletin on the Development of the Transportation Industry.” The bulletin shows that over the past year, China’s transportation infrastructure has continued to improve, and key indicators such as personnel flow and freight transport have maintained relatively rapid growth.
The “main framework” is accelerating its formation, and the comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network is taking shape more quickly. As of the end of last year, the national railway operating mileage reached 165,000 kilometers, of which the high-speed railway operating mileage exceeded 50,000 kilometers, further improving the “eight vertical and eight horizontal” high-speed railway main framework; the national highway mileage reached 5.5789 million kilometers, an increase of 88,500 kilometers compared to the end of 2024, with the coverage density of the expressway network further enhanced; the navigable mileage of inland waterways reached 128,700 kilometers, and the number of production-use berths at national ports totaled 22,346; there were 270 certified civil aviation transport airports nationwide, an increase of 7 compared to the end of the previous year, including 109 transport airports with an annual passenger throughput exceeding one million person-times.
The “main arteries” have become smoother, and transport service capacity continues to improve. Personnel flow is efficient and convenient. Last year, the volume of cross-regional personnel movements reached nearly 66.9 billion person-times, an increase of 3.5%, setting a new historical high; freight transport was busy and orderly. Last year, the volume of commercial freight transport reached 58.7 billion tons, an increase of 3.2% compared to the previous year, equivalent to an average of about 160 million tons of goods moving back and forth every day.
“The urban logistics network is continuously being improved, the rapid transit network has made new progress, the international logistics supply chain has become more open and shared, and services support the smooth flow of the economic cycle, effectively supporting a dynamic and vibrant China,” said Zhou Jian, Deputy Director of the Information Center of the China Academy of Transportation Sciences.
Investment in transportation infrastructure continues to intensify. In 2025, fixed asset investment in transportation reached 3.67 trillion yuan, strongly supporting the construction of the national comprehensive three-dimensional transportation network. Riding the wave of large-scale equipment updates, transportation equipment is accelerating its shift towards green and low-carbon development.
A relevant official from the Ministry of Transport stated that during the “15th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s transportation development has entered a new stage of comprehensive transformation. It is necessary to focus on perfecting the modern comprehensive transportation system, strive to strengthen the advantages of the facility network, make up for shortcomings and weaknesses, enhance integrated integration, strengthen safety improvements, highlight digital and intelligent upgrades, emphasize green transformation, and ensure the basic completion of the modern comprehensive transportation system.
