The Port Authority of Castellón grew in May above the average of the Spanish port system in cargo movement, 20%, compared to 3.15% for the rest of the terminals in the country. In the same way, the Port of Castellón stands out from the rest in growth during the accumulated year.
Thus, between January and May, PortCastelló channeled 8.3 million tons of cargo, representing an accumulated increase of 11.5%. This figure contrasts with the performance of the set of ports of general interest of the State, whose average growth stood at 0.3%.
The differentiating performance of the Port of Castellón is especially visible in general cargo traffic, a strategic segment of high added value in which the port of Castellón has recorded an increase of 66% up to May, an evolution that stands out from the average drop of 0.7% experienced nationally.
It also records an excellent performance of containerized general cargo, which has soared 62.8% at the Port of Castellón, while the entire system suffers a decline of 1.1% in this indicator. As a direct consequence of this dynamic, container movement measured in TEU has risen 57.8% at the port facility, compared to the moderate increase of 2.8% recorded by the sector average.
Regarding solid bulk, the historical and productive pillar of the facility, PortCastelló consolidates its strength with an increase of 14% in this accumulated period. This result again contrasts positively with the general trend of Spanish ports, which record an average decrease of 3.6% in this type of traffic. With these data, the Port of Castellón strengthens its third position in the national ranking in solid bulk traffic.
The president of the Port Authority of Castellón, Rubén Ibáñez, assessed these indicators very positively. “These figures do not respond to a cyclical impulse, but to a real gain in competitiveness. Capturing general cargo and containerized traffic at rates that multiply the system average, and doing so in a general scenario of contraction, demonstrates that the international logistics network trusts PortCastelló as an agile and efficient ally for its supply chains,” he stated.
Likewise, the highest representative of the port highlighted the value of the positioning achieved in bulk. “Remaining firmly as the third port in Spain in solid bulk, growing at double digits while the sector declines, ratifies our indispensable role as the great economic engine and logistical support for the key industrial sectors of our province and its hinterland,” added Ibáñez.
