The International Maritime Organization (IMO) suspended evacuation efforts aimed at removing hundreds of stranded vessels and thousands of crew members through the Strait of Hormuz, after a ship was attacked in the Gulf of Oman.

“I have been informed of an attack that occurred today in the Gulf of Oman against a vessel that passed through the Strait of Hormuz. This vessel was not transiting under the IMO evacuation framework,” stated Arsenio Domínguez, Secretary-General of the IMO, in a statement.

“I have decided to temporarily suspend its implementation in order to reconfirm that the necessary security guarantees remain in place for the ships on our evacuation list and for all those in the region,” he added.

The initiative, which was launched on Tuesday, June 23, was a voluntary option for vessels and their crews to sail out of the gulf using two routes. One through Iranian waters and the other through Omani waters, under the supervision of the United States, according to what was indicated by the IMO.

It is worth mentioning that the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an incident 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Dahit, Oman, reporting that a vessel had been impacted on the starboard side by an unknown projectile.
