«I have been informed of an attack today in the Gulf of Oman on a ship that crossed the Strait of Hormuz. This ship did not transit under the IMO evacuation framework», stated in an announcement Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the UN International Maritime Organization.

«I decided to temporarily suspend its implementation, in order to reconfirm that the necessary security guarantees still apply for the ships on our evacuation list and for all those in the area».

The operation, which began on Tuesday, was a voluntary option for ships and their crews to depart from the Gulf using two routes: one through Iranian waters and the other through Omani waters under US supervision, the IMO stated this week.

Approximately 57 ships carrying about 1,100 seafarers had transited the Strait of Hormuz under the evacuation plan from June 23 to the morning of June 25, according to initial IMO data earlier on Thursday.

The IMO did not provide details on the ship that was attacked.

A container ship reported a suspected attack as it attempted to pass through the strait near the coast of Oman on Thursday, the British maritime agency UKMTO said earlier.

A maritime security source stated that the ship was likely targeted by a drone, although it is not yet clear who carried out the attack.
