The departure clearance was granted after a thorough inspection of the vessel and the determination of its seaworthiness by the competent authorities.

Earlier, extensive technical checks had been carried out to investigate the causes of the total blackout that occurred during the voyage, as well as a new underwater inspection of the vessel’s underwater hull.

The “KISSAMOS”, which was performing the scheduled route Piraeus – Milos – Souda, had departed from Milos carrying 1,246 passengers and 108 crew members, when, under conditions of northerly winds of intensity 5-6 Beaufort, it suffered a total loss of electrical power, resulting in it running aground in shallow waters.

Under the coordination of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (J.R.C.C.) of the Hellenic Coast Guard – Greek Coast Guard, forces were immediately mobilized in the area, while before each refloating operation, an on-site underwater inspection was carried out by a private diver.

Subsequently, the vessel was refloated using its own means and returned safely to the port of Milos, escorted by a patrol vessel of the Hellenic Coast Guard.

By decision of the Milos Port Authority, its departure had initially been prohibited until the completion of the required checks and the investigation into the causes that caused the blackout and the grounding.
