Loconi Intermodal has started building a new intermodal terminal in Zbąszynek, Poland, expanding its network across Central and Eastern Europe.

The company officially launched the project with a cornerstone-laying ceremony.

Located on a 9.4-hectare site, the terminal sits next to the E20 railway line, part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). It also offers direct access to the A2 motorway and S3 expressway.

The project received more than PLN 76 million in funding from the European Union’s FEnIKS programme.

Construction is expected to finish in the first quarter of 2028.

Once completed, the terminal will feature four handling tracks. It will handle two full-length trains at the same time. The facility will also provide storage for 4,500 TEUs and operate two electric rubber-tyred gantry (E-RTG) cranes.

According to Niels Jakobsgaard Andersen, CEO of Loconi Intermodal, the investment reflects growing cargo volumes through Polish ports and increasing demand for efficient inland transport.

The new facility will improve rail connections across Central and Eastern Europe. It will also strengthen PSA Group’s Node to Network (N2N) strategy by linking ports, inland terminals and international transport corridors.

In addition, the terminal will help increase rail freight capacity. It is also expected to improve supply chain resilience, lower transport emissions and reduce pressure on major road corridors.

Polish construction company Adamietz will serve as the project’s general contractor.
