It was released by the Korean Register of Shipping

Yesterday, on the occasion of the international maritime industry fair Posidonia 2026, which concludes today in Athens, a ceremony was held in which the Korean Register of Shipping granted the South Korean shipbuilding company HJ Shipbuilding & Construction Co. (HJSC) approval in principle for a project to build a 10,000 TEU container ship powered by biofuels, i.e., with low-carbon fuel obtained by mixing biofuels, such as vegetable or animal oils, with traditional fossil fuel-based fuels.

After signing a collaboration agreement with the Register last year to acquire the necessary technology, HJSC conducted research on the application of biofuel propulsion systems to container ships of this capacity currently under construction, and last month completed the technological development of these systems.

“Thanks to the development of technology for biofuel-powered container ships,” commented HJSC CEO Yoo Sang-Cheol at yesterday’s ceremony, “we anticipate a positive impact on sales and order acquisition in the eco-friendly ship market. Since the construction of decarbonized ships is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we will ensure our technological competitiveness to establish a profitable collaboration with shipowners.”
