In a new partnership, Finnish supplier Wärtsilä will advise offshore company Solstad on lowering CO2 fleet emissions. New fuels such as methanol and ammonia may come into play.

Offshore carrier Solstad has hired supplier Wärtsilä to find solutions for reducing carbon emissions from its fleet.

According to a statement, Wärtsilä will begin as counselor and technical expert to Solstad, which has a target of climate neutrality by 2050. The Finland-based company may however also become a potential supplier of solutions to the ships.

Hydrogen, ammonia and methanol are mentioned as possible fuels which the Solstad vessels are to sail on in the future. According to Wärtsilä Senior Sales Manager Roy H. Stavland, it is still too soon to say what solutions will be the most relevant for Solstad.

”However, it is extremely likely that future propulsion solutions operating with new alternative fuels, such as ammonia /or methanol, will be key enablers as these fuels become widely available for bunkering,” states Stavland in the announcement.

Besides the ambition to reach climate neutrality by 2050, Solstad also targets a halving of CO2 emissions by 2030. However, they don’t disclose the exact scale of their emissions.
