Within the scope of the investigation initiated by the Istanbul Anatolia Republic Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the incident that occurred on November 19 on the Panama-flagged vessel named Swanlake off the coast of the Island of Democracy and Freedoms, where one person died and two people were injured, the ship’s second captain was arrested by the On-Duty Criminal Judgeship of Peace and sent to prison.

The Anatolia Republic Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office made a statement regarding the matter. The statement included the following expressions: “Upon receiving a report of poisoning on the Panama-flagged vessel Swanlake off the coast of the Island of Democracy and Freedoms, investigation procedures were immediately initiated, and according to initial determinations, it was established that one foreign national died and two people were injured. The post-mortem examination and autopsy procedures for the deceased citizen have been completed. During the initial inspection on the vessel, it was determined that the incident occurred because the gas level in the slop tank had reached the maximum level and the deceased and injured ship personnel entered the tank without taking precautions. The ship’s Second Captain, whose responsibility was identified in the obtained expert report, was detained and arrested by the On-Duty Criminal Judgeship of Peace. Since the deceased, injured, and the person responsible in the incident are foreign nationals, the procedural actions are being carried out meticulously in accordance with the Circulars numbered 70/1 and 71/1 of the Ministry of Justice General Directorate of International Law and Foreign Relations.”
