Reuters reported that Tanzania will restart the Bagamoyo port project next month (December). The Bagamoyo port is part of the large Bagamoyo Special Economic Zone plan, located about 75 kilometers north of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital. It was first initiated in 2004, and the project covers industrial parks and railway and road networks.
Due to the long-term congestion at Tanzania’s primary port, Dar es Salaam port, many shipping companies have diverted to the port of Mombasa in neighboring Kenya, causing Tanzania to lose some business in the African inland market.
In February this year, the Tanzania Ports Authority confirmed that it had signed a preliminary development memorandum for the Bagamoyo port with China, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
Tanzania’s chief government spokesperson stated that the port will have 28 berths, with 14 of them to be constructed initially. He revealed that construction equipment is en route but did not provide further details. The port will have a water depth of up to 20 meters and will be capable of handling mega-container ships with a cargo capacity of up to 25,000 TEU.
