Advanced satellite communications technology will be installed on newbuild commercial ships in Chinese shipyards under a new strategic contract

China TranComm Technologies Co (TranTech) will provide Cobham Satcom’s latest very small aperture terminal (VSAT) antennas for new ships built for the Chinese merchant shipping fleet and to replace hardware.

Sailor XTR antennas will enable these ships to connect to global constellations of geostationary orbiting satellites using Ku-band of radiocommunications frequencies.

China Transport Telecommunication Information Group Co, TranTech, is the only maritime satellite safety communication provider in China. It will offer, install and support Sailor 1000 XTR Ku antennas on Chinese commercial ships.

This antenna provides high-speed connectivity to ships and onboard crew, have a built-in ethernet port for easy integration of third-party devices and functions for switching between satellite and close-to-shore mobile phone services.

“Our commercial shipping customers demand the most reliable connectivity and we are confident the Sailor XTR platform will deliver exactly this,” said China TranTech general manager Kong Xianglun.

“We have chosen to focus on Sailor XTR because the technology allows flexible, easy access for remote services, while providing a rugged foundation for internet connectivity even in the extreme conditions that Chinese merchant vessels face regularly.”

Copenhagen, Denmark-headquartered Cobham Satcom developed the Sailor XTR range of VSAT antennas covering multiple constellations, orbits and frequencies, enabling service providers and shipowners to connect to the fastest, most competitive high-speed maritime broadband. There are versions for C-band, Ku-band and Ka-band.

Cobham Satcom regional sales director Stephan Jørgensen said the company has built strong representation in China and a global service partner network to support shipowners and onboard VSAT. “Our local presence enables China TranTech to optimise all aspects of connectivity for its customers,” he said.
