Evergreen has become the first shipping company to complete a voyage across the Pacific Ocean using an AI-based autonomous navigation system developed by Samsung Heavy Industries.
The 15,000 TEU container ship sailed from Oakland, USA, to Kaohsiung, Taiwan Area, China between August 25 and September 6 – a route of approximately 10,000 km – during which the Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS) system continuously analyzed weather and route conditions. During the voyage, SAS performed over 100 navigation advisories and more than 200 automatic control actions without intervention from the crew.
The system integrates radar, GPS, AIS, and cameras with AI monitoring and controls both the engine and rudder to avoid collisions. The latest version can also optimize speed and route selection to reduce fuel consumption and ensure timely arrival.
“SAS has evolved from a collision avoidance tool into a system that can independently maintain economic speed and arrive on time. It contributes to global shipping as an environmentally friendly means to reduce fuel consumption,” says Lee Dong Yeon, Vice President at Samsung Heavy Industries.
Samsung continues its collaboration with Evergreen to improve both fuel efficiency and navigation accuracy in future projects.
