During the day today, the port of Algeciras has received a delegation from the embassy of the Philippines in Spain, headed by the general consul, Mark Francis Hamoy, accompanied by the commercial counselor, Althea Karen Antonio, and the attaché counselor, Carlos J. Barcelon, who were received by the president of the Port Authority (APBA), Gerardo Landaluce; the president of the Compot Port Community, José Manuel Tejedor and the head of market development in Asia for Andalucía Trade, Paola Castro, the regional agency that organized the visit. The parties held a working meeting at the APBA headquarters and subsequently made a visit to the main facilities of the port of Algeciras.
During the current fiscal year, /export traffic between the port of Algeciras and the Philippines has increased by 27%, thus becoming the second Asian market after China, as revealed by Gerardo Landaluce. Through Algeciras, the Pacific archipelago sends to Europe -among other things- automotive components and plastic manufactures; while Spain exports to the Philippines from the port of the Strait, Jerez brandy, olive oil and pork, among other products, creating a positive trade balance for Spain. However, as Tejedor indicated in this case, “there is much room for improvement,” something that the port companies are working on with the aim of increasing Algeciras-Philippines connectivity, currently covered by four lines with a transit time starting from 34 days via Singapore or Kaohsiung (Taiwan Area, China).
This meeting continues the work started exactly one year ago with what was the I Commercial Mission of the port of Algeciras in the Philippines with the aim of strengthening commercial relations, which was followed by several meetings in Madrid, such as participation in the XI Business Forum, among other activities.
