BAR Technologies has received the 2025 GREEN4SEA-Europort Energy Transition Award for its WindWings® system, a wind-assisted propulsion technology now proven in commercial operations. The recognition highlights growing confidence in wind power as a practical path to maritime decarbonisation.

BAR Technologies has been recognised with the 2025 GREEN4SEA-Europort Energy Transition Award for its WindWings® technology, marking a significant acknowledgment of wind propulsion as a proven, commercially viable tool for reducing emissions in global shipping.

Presented during the Europort 2025 Exhibition, the award celebrates organisations advancing maritime sustainability. BAR Technologies was selected from a shortlist that included Accelleron, bound4blue, Brunvoll, NatPower Marine, and Oceanly Performance. The judges cited WindWings® as a ready-to-deploy solution capable of cutting fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions while improving vessel efficiency.

WindWings® is a large-scale wind-assisted propulsion system that uses BAR Technologies’ patented three-element wing design. Each wing generates 2.5 times more lift than a conventional single-element structure, delivering average fuel savings of around 1.5 tonnes per wing per day. Unlike other wind-assisted systems, WindWings® requires no external power to operate, making it a practical choice for both newbuilds and retrofits.

“This award validates WindWings® as a practical and impactful technology. It’s not just an innovation, it’s operational,” said Tom James, Sales Director at BAR Technologies. “We’ve shown that wind propulsion can deliver measurable decarbonisation today, not just in future projections. At BAR Technologies we’re focused on delivering scalable technologies that are commercially ready and performance-led.”

Accepting the award, James joined a panel discussion with other winners to discuss the role of regulation, collaboration, and data transparency in advancing the energy transition.

John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, said: “We are honoured to receive this recognition from GREEN4SEA and Europort. WindWings® reflects our core mission, to apply world-class engineering to solve real-world problems. This award is a tribute to the relentless work of our team and partners who believe, as we do, that sustainable shipping starts with solutions that perform, scale, and deliver significant reductions in global emissions.”

He added, “The transition isn’t a future concept it’s a today’s challenge. Our role is to ensure operators have access to commercially viable pathways to decarbonisation and WindWings® is delivering on that promise.”

With successful installations on vessels including Berge Olympus, BAR Technologies continues to expand deployment of WindWings® across multiple vessel types, reinforcing its position as one of the leaders in the move toward a cleaner, more efficient maritime future.
