The Port of Barcelona has opened the tender for the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of the automated European border control equipment, which includes the /Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), and which have to be implemented in all ports owned by the Spanish State. The EES and ETIAS define the way entries and exits are carried out at a border control and require an electronic registration of the biometric data and documentation (passport and ID card) of citizens from outside the European Union (EU).

The tender, which is carried out through an open procedure with the selection of a single awarded company, includes the supply, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of the necessary equipment; the adaptation of the spaces and infrastructure of the affected terminals, as well as an auxiliary information service aimed at facilitating the entry of people through the border crossing.

Incorporation in the terminals

The necessary infrastructure includes automatic gates, self-service kiosks, and supervision and verification tablets, as well as video surveillance systems and digital signage, among others. The awarded company will also have to provide the control booths: containers equipped with EES technology and cabins in the manual control posts. The terminals of the Port of Barcelona that will incorporate this border control system are the cruise terminals C, E, G, and H and the ferry terminals.

The base tender budget is €12,934,346 (VAT excluded) and has a grant of 11.9 million euros from the EU’s Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (IBMF). The contract period is two years plus two possible annual extensions.
