“Alliance with Greece, Cyprus and Malta to decisively address the critical issues of the ETS system”
London – The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi, held a day of institutional meetings in London on the occasion of his participation in the Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
During the proceedings, Rixi met with the competent ministers of Greece, Cyprus, and Malta, strengthening the common front of the Mediterranean countries on the main challenges of the maritime sector. The talks centered on the need to protect the centrality of the Mediterranean in global trade routes and to decisively address the critical issues of the ETS (Emission Trading System) applied to maritime transport.
Rixi reiterated the Italian position: the ETS represents a barrier to world trade and penalizes the competitiveness of European logistics and the entire maritime industry. The Mediterranean countries are therefore calling for specific measures and greater attention from the European institutions.
In the morning, at the new headquarters of the Italian Embassy in London, Casa Italia, the Deputy Minister, together with Ambassador Inigo Lambertini, met with a selected representation of financial operators in the United Kingdom specialized in infrastructure. The meeting provided an opportunity to illustrate the investment plans for major public works and transport initiated by the Government with the aim of consolidating the country’s strategic role in European and Mediterranean connectivity networks.
Rixi also held bilateral meetings with the Deputy Minister for Territorial Development of Ukraine, Shkrum Ivanivna, with the Minister of Transport of Qatar, Sheikh Al Thani, and with his British government counterpart, Keir Mather.
