The initiative of the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology (EL.I.N.T.) brought together leading academics and researchers from six key bodies of the country — the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the University of the Aegean, the National Centre for Research and Technological Development (CERTH), the University of West Attica (UNIWA) and the Hellenic Naval Academy (HNA) — highlighting the role of research in the transition of shipping to a sustainable and digitally advanced model.

At the center of the presentations were issues such as decarbonization, alternative fuels, maritime innovation, ship autonomy and intelligent systems.

From NTUA, Professor Mr. Dimitrios Karonis focused on renewable substitutes for marine fuels, while Associate Professor Mr. Konstantinos Anyfantis analyzed modern research trends in naval architecture.

From AUTH, Professor Mr. Leonidas Ntziachristos presented developments in new fuels and next-generation engine rooms.

Special emphasis was also placed on digital technologies, with Professor Mr. Dimitrios Zissis (University of the Aegean) presenting applications of robotics and autonomous ships. Dr. Stella Bezergianni (CERTH) highlighted integrated energy solutions for zero-emission shipping.

In the field of naval architecture education and research, Associate Professor Georgios Livanos (UNIWA) presented the strategic directions of the Institution.

From the Hellenic Naval Academy, Professor Mr. Stamatis Kalligeros highlighted the role of fuels and energy technologies in the shipping of the future, while Associate Professor Mr. Georgios Vardoulis focused on interdisciplinary applications in marine technology.

The event clearly highlighted the potential of Greek maritime research to play a leading role in international shipping developments, substantially strengthening the connection between academic knowledge and the modern needs of the market.

The Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology expressed warm thanks to all the speakers for their substantial contribution, as well as to the industry professionals who attended the event. Special mention was made of the Commandant of the Hellenic Naval Academy, Rear Admiral Ioannis Retsas H.N., for his honorary presence. Furthermore, the decisive contribution of Professor Mr. Stamatis Kalligeros, a member of EL.I.N.T., who was responsible for the overall organization and contributed substantially to the successful implementation of the action, was noted.

A greeting was addressed by the President of EL.I.N.T., Mr. George Pratikakis, while the Director of the Institute, Dr. Nikolaos Liapis, closed the event by summarizing, among other things, the key conclusions of the presentations.

The success of “Blue Frontiers” confirms the strategic importance of innovation and cooperation for the future of shipping, especially in a period of intense transformation, where challenges coexist with significant opportunities for the industry.
