The Port Authority of Santos (APS) concluded at the beginning of September a dredging campaign in the Organized Port of Santos.
The service lasted approximately two months and consisted of the removal of sediments and the maintenance of the expected depth in the navigation channel, from the Alemoa area to the Barra, in Ponta da Praia. The work also included the berthing sites.
After the dredging, the APS conducted a bathymetry that confirmed the depths. Thus, the navigation channel, for example, maintains approximately 15 meters in depth, allowing access for large vessels.
“Thanks to the dredging campaigns, the Port of Santos has managed to maintain the operational draft and the safety of navigation. The port complex is located in an estuary that receives a significant volume of sediments, which can cause silting and reduce the established design levels, especially due to rains and high-intensity oceanographic events,” the APS communicated.
The president of the APS, Anderson Pomini, commented that “maintaining the current draft is essential, but we are already advancing in the process of deepening the channel, something that has not been done for more than ten years, responding to a market need, which is the deepening of the Port of Santos navigation channel.”
“We are opening a safe path to reach 16 and, subsequently, 17 meters in depth, which will provide definitive peace of mind to receive, at any time of day or night, the world’s largest ships,” he concluded.
