On July 16, the second 7,000-car LNG dual-fuel car carrier, named “BYD ZHENGZHOU,” built by CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for BYD, was christened and delivered in Nansha, Guangzhou.
The BYD 7,000-car LNG dual-fuel car carrier is a “green and low-carbon upgraded 2.0 version” of the series of car carriers constructed by GSI. The vessel has an overall length of 199.9 meters, a beam of 38 meters, a design draft of 9 meters, and a design speed of 18.5 knots. Equipped with an LNG dual-fuel propulsion system, a permanent magnet shaft generator, and various energy-saving measures such as energy-efficient devices and drag-reducing antifouling paint, it is a green, intelligent, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient car carrier.
A total of two vessels of this type were built by GSI, with the first vessel, “BYD HEFEI,” delivered and put into operation in early January. Both vessels are directly owned by BYD Group. With the commissioning of the second vessel, “BYD ZHENGZHOU,” China’s domestic automobile export transportation capacity will be further enhanced.
The successful collaboration between GSI and BYD marks a strong start between a Chinese automotive manufacturing giant and a world-class shipbuilder. It also exemplifies how both parties leverage their respective strengths to promote the coordinated economic development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. This partnership fully demonstrates their shared commitment to building China into a strong transportation and shipping nation, as well as their mission to support “domestic ships built by domestic builders and domestic goods transported by domestic vessels.”
Leveraging its technological advantages, GSI has secured nearly 40 orders for car carriers, maintaining a leading position in this niche market. To date, GSI has successfully built and delivered 17 LNG dual-fuel car carriers with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles and one with an 8,600-vehicle capacity, totaling 127,600 transport slots.
Currently, GSI has established a diversified shipbuilding portfolio, including three core types (tankers, container ships, and roll-on/roll-off vessels) and three specialty types (high-end passenger ro-ro ships, semi-submersible ships, and polar vessels). In the construction of car carriers, GSI and its sister companies have benchmarked and exchanged knowledge, mutually improving their capabilities. By continuously advancing lean management and implementing multi-dimensional, full-process improvements, production efficiency has significantly increased.
It is reported that BYD is a leader in China’s new energy vehicle manufacturing. In 2024, BYD sold over 4.27 million new energy vehicles, securing its position as the top-selling automaker and brand in China’s automotive market, as well as the global leader in new energy vehicle sales. With the commissioning of the “BYD ZHENGZHOU” car carrier, China’s automotive brands will gain enhanced support for their global expansion.
