HOPA Ports celebrates the tenth anniversary of its See Something, Say Something security initiative, a program that has transformed the safety culture from reactive to proactive across its port network.
The campaign, which began with a simple poster, has become a fundamental part of the port community’s situational awareness, empowering employees, tenants, and partners to report suspicious activities or behaviors that may represent a threat.
HOPA Ports’ Director of Security and Protection and Port Captain, Vicki Gruber, highlighted how the initiative changed the mindset about security. “Ten years ago, those suspicious moments might have gone unnoticed. But today, thanks to a simple ‘See Something, Say Something’ idea, they drive action. It was a proactive initiative designed to empower our employees… to report any suspicious activity or behavior,” she stated.
Every report, whether of an unknown vehicle prowling or a contractor out of place, is taken seriously and initiates an investigation by the Port Captaincy and Port Patrol team.
The key to success lies in true teamwork and the strong relationships forged with public safety agencies at the local, provincial, and federal levels. This collaboration ensures that any concern receives the appropriate action, including the potential involvement of law enforcement.
For Gruber, whose life has been linked to security for over 30 years, the greatest inspiration is not the incidents, but “our people.” “I know this initiative is making a difference in keeping our port safe, and that is what motivates me every day,” she stated.
As it commemorates its tenth anniversary, HOPA Ports not only celebrates past achievements but also looks to the future, focused on keeping the proactive spirit alive. “I want the next decade to be just as proactive. Let’s continue to lead with awareness, speak up courageously, and protect what matters most,” concluded Gruber.
