THE 135th canton Fair has recorded a surge in global orders, clearing pandemic backlogs, but participants at the fair also reported fierce bargaining over prices, squeezing manufacturers’ bottom lines, reports Caixin.

Established in 1957, the trade fair held in the spring and fall in Guangzhou, is a big contributor to China’s exports, and widely viewed as an indicator of trends in the country’s foreign trade.

Foshan Sol Electronic Industry Co, an inverter and energy storage equipment manufacturer, reported a 20 per cent year-on-year increase in orders in the first quarter, prompting an urgent hiring of workers.

The fair’s proper name since 2007 has been China Import and Export Fair, renamed from Chinese Export Commodities Fair. It isis co-hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China and the provincial government of Guangdong Province and organised by China Foreign Trade Centre.
